This article is about playable chessboards and pieces made from LEGO elements. For LEGO Chess the videogame go to LEGO Chess.

Many adult fans of LEGO have created chess boards and playing pieces for chess using Minifigures or bricks or combinations of both.

Knight's Kingdom Chess Set

In 2005 The LEGO Company released a chess set based on the Knights' Kingdom theme.

The Parts

The set contained 167 pieces, including one 32x32 white baseplate. Thirty-two (32) 4x4 plates were glued to the baseplate in a black and white chessboard pattern. Velcro was used to attach the board to the box. Each side had sixteen pieces, twelve pieces were minifigs, two pieces were made from other elements. All of the chess pieces were pre-assembled, but not glued (see below).

The "No Glue" Campaign

Benjamin Ellermann's "No Glue" avatar

When fans at Classic Castle.com first learned about this set, there was general exitement. Fans had been creating chess sets for years, and it was anticipated that this set would double as an army builder. Soon, a rumor surfaced that the chess pieces would be glued (like the keychains). This would have potentially limited their usefulness as new members of an existing army. Almost instantly a "No Glue" campaign began. Benjamin Ellermann created a "No Glue" avatar that was quickly adopted by at least fifteen other Classic-Castle members, and many fans proclaimed "Don't Glue Your Figures, TLG!" The debate was picked up on LUGNET.

Soon Jake McKee took notice and promised to look into the matter. When the announcement came that the figures would not be glued, jubilation and orders followed, and it didn't take long before the set was only available through backorder. It is not clear if there were ever any plans to glue the figures, or if the fan outcry swayed LEGO to change its plans, although many of those who participated adamantly believe that their voices were heard and their concerns addressed.

The popularity of the Knights' Kingdom Chess set may have been a factor in the creation and release of a version based on the Vikings subtheme later the same year.
